Young mechanic's ''water car'' proves fit for sea water

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 5 (UNI) Braving sea waves, Vinodh, a young mechanic who designed an indigenous ''water car,'' drove his amphibious vehicle into the open sea affirming his invention could withstand both the calm and rough waters.

Vinodh, who ventured on his water car into the Karamana river last month in his first trial-run in the sea, went as far as two km into the rising waves at Vizhinjam, near here.

''It was a successful run. The car braved the sea which was rough due to the lunar eclipse. Even in the high waves, I could drive the car,'' he told UNI.

The waves were very high and even rose above the car. But even then, the car had a smooth run, he said after his first trial run.

The young mechanic was in the news after he converted a Maruti 800 into a ''water car'' for a mere Rs 8.5 lakh when the other amphibious cars cost over Rs 1.75 crore in the global market.

But he is disappointed for not getting any encouragement from the government.

''I have not got anything from the government. It seems the auto industry in this country is also not interested as no one has contacted me till now,'' he said.

Pointing out a multi-national company from Dubai had approached him, Vinodh said he would part with the technology as no one in the country was interested in his design. But, he expressed desire to part with the technology to the Indian government without any monetary benefits.
