Sarkar appeals to Reang refugees to end hunger strike

Agartala, Mar 5 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today appealed to the agitating Reang refugees to withdraw their indefinite hunger strike that entered the fourth day today.

Mr Sarkar, who led a four-member delegation of three political parties, assured the refugees that all possible steps would be taken to fulfil their demands.

The Reang refugees, who took shelter in different camps set up by the Tripura Government at Kanchanpur sub-division in North district, since 1997 following ethnic violence in Mizoram in 1997, were on fast, demanding safe passage to their homes.

Mr Sarkar said he will talk to the Union Government in this regard and request for sending senior officials to hold talks with the refugees.

The refugee leaders, however, did not commit anything regarding Mr Sarkar's appeal to end the fast.

Union Home secretary Naveen Chandra Verma is expected here tomorrow in this connection.

Besides, Mr Sarkar, other members of the delegation included tribal welfare and forest minister Jitendra Chowdhury, opposition leader and Congress President Samir Ranjan Barman and INPT leader Shyamacharan Tripura.

GE Energy grants Rs 75cr to Binani Cement's 22.3 MW power plant

New Delhi, Mar 6 (UNI) GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of General Electric, today said it will lend Rs 75 crore to Binani Cement Ltd for construction of a 22.3 MW thermal power plant and associated common utilities in Sirohi, Rajasthan. The company will also set up its first office in the country to pursue additional energy and water investments. The move will enable Binani Cement, a subsidiary of Binani Industries Ltd, to meet its enhanced power requirements to expand.....

Marandi's bodyguard beats up photographer

Jamshedpur, Mar 5 (UNI) Photographer of a local Hindi daily was beaten up with the butt of a rifle by the bodyguard of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Democratic) president and former Chief Minsiter of Jharkhand Babulal Marandi at Tata Main Hospital here, where the body of the slain JMM MP Sunil Mahto was kept. The security men also misbehaved with the members of other electronic media when they were taking snaps of Mr Marandi. The incident took place when Mr Marandi went.....

EU to take India's high duties on spirits to WTO dispute panel

New Delhi, Mar 6 (UNI) The visiting European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Mariann Fischer Boel today said the European Union could take the issue of high duties by India on imported spirits and wines to the WTO's dispute panel, but disfavoured linking trade with human rights issues. ''I am extremely sorry and disappointed to see that India did not slash high tariffs on wines and spirits in its recent budget,'' Ms Boel said at a press conference here......
