Photography exhibition on Islam by British lenseman begins

Kolkata, Mar 5 (UNI) A unique photo exhibition entitled ''Art of integration. Islam In Britain's Green and pleasant Land'' by renowned photographer Peter Sanders was inaugurated here today by British Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata Simon Wilson.

Being organised by the British Deputy High Commission in association with Maulana Shaukat Ali Foundation, the photo essay has captured different aspects of day-to-day lives of Muslim community in Britain and salutes their 'ordinary and exrtra-ordinary' contributions to the British society.

From here the exhibition will travel to Hyderabad (13-18 March), Lucknow (21-24 March) and New Delhi(27-31 March).

Born in London in 1946 Peter Sanders' professional career in photography began during 1960s when he photographed most of the major stars in the music business including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and the Rolling Stones. But from 1970 Sanders' attention turned inward which set him on a spiritual search to India and the East.

The spiritual beauty of Islam left an indelible impression on him and after his return to England he embraced Islam.

Zakir on canvas

Chennai, Mar 14 (UNI) The flamboyance and style of tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain have inspired a self-taught artist in the city to come out with a series of abstract paintings of him titled 'Zakir in My Dreams.' The exhibition of 23 abstract paintings, released under Volume one, was inaugurated by the tabla maestro at a function here. An ardent fan of Zakir Hussain, the artist A P Shreethar, who has conducted 35 shows of his paintings, including exhibitions in Australia.....

Kerala Folklore fellowship, award announced

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 15 (UNI) Kerala Cultural Minister M A Baby today announced the Kerala Folklore Academy fellowship and awards. Malayala Manorama Assistant Editor Paul Manail's book 'Keralathile Bhashanunapakshangal' was chosen the best book. He will receive a cash prize of Rs 5,000. The three fellowships were shared by Podikkalam Parambil Kannan Peruvannan (Theyyam), Ustad A V Ahammad Kutty Master (Daft mutt) and P P Madhava Panicker (Marathukali), Mr Baby said. Twentyfive artistes would be honoured with folklore awards in their respective.....

3-day Phalgun Utsav to showcase Bengali culture in Goa

Panaji, Feb 20 (UNI) As part of an initiative to showcase Bengali culture and its links with Goa, the Bengali Cultural Association here has decided to organise a three-day 'Phalgun Utsav' from February 22. The secretary of the association R P Paul told mediapersons that the House of Dempos, Goa Tourism Development Corporation, Eastern Zone Cultural Centre, Kolkata and Wisitex Foundation besides the state department of Art and Culture will collaborate for the event, claimed to be first of its kind.....
