New Indian-Bhutan Friendship Treaty enters into force

New Delhi, Mar 5 (UNI) The updated India-Bhutan Friendship Treaty, allowing the tiny Himalayan Kingdom to import independently arms and ammunition and defence equipment for its security, has come into force following exchange of Instruments of Ratification between the two countries.

The Treaty signed in New Delhi on February eight during the visit of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Fifth Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan, updates an earlier Treaty which was signed initially in Darjeeling on August 8, 1949.

Besides emphasising strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade and commerce, the Treaty also binds the two neighbours into an agreement not to allow their respective territories to be used for activities inimical to each other.

''...Neither government shall allow the use of its territory for activities harmful to the national security and interest of the other,'' Article 2 of the Treaty says.

Article 4 says ''...the Government of Bhutan shall be free to import, from or through India into Bhutan, whatever arms, ammunition, machinery, warlike material or stores as may be required or desired for the strength or welfare of Bhutan...'' Bhutan agreed that there shall be no export of such arms, ammunition and materials outside Bhutan either by the Government of Bhutan or by private individuals, the Treaty says.
