Media should educate people on legislations

Kochi, Mar 5 (UNI) Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan today urged the media to educate people on the ramifications of various legislations and to draw attention of the policy makers on the lack of judiciary infrastructure.

Addressing a gathering after the launch of a magazine on lrhsl issue 'Neethi' here, Justice Balakrishnan said the media has a pivotal role to play in educating the people on the implications of various legislations enacted in the Parliament.

Expressing happiness over recent media coverage of legal issues, he said people should be aware of the impact of a legislation on the public life.

He said people before criticising the judiciary should also know the constraints within which the legal system was working in the country.

'' The judiciary is working under pressure and adverse circumstances, as large number of cases are pending in various courts,'' Justice Balakrishnan said.

The CJI said the media should draw attention of the policy makers on the lack of judiciary infrastructure.

The media should deliberate on the ways and means that could be adopted to improve the legal system, he added.

Earlier, Justice Balakrishnan inaugurated a lecture series on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of Panampilly Govinda Menon.

Cops bust inter-state gang

Mumbai, Mar 6 (UNI) The city police busted an inter-state robbers gang with the arrest of six alleged history-sheeters here this morning. Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kamlakar told reporters that Detection of Crime Branch sleuths, on specific information, lay in wait near Chembur here and arrested the six. GSU demands magisterial inquiry into BSF killing

Shillong, Mar 6 (UNI) The Garo Students' Union (GSU) has asked the Meghalaya government to institute a magisterial inquiry into the alleged killing of a 16-year-old boy by the Border Security Force. The boy, identified as Mithun Marak, was allegedly gunned down by BSF personnel on March 3 night in state's Ryngku village bordering Bangladesh. Body of a fishermen recovered from Arabian sea

Jamnagar, Feb 24 (UNI) The Coast Guard, engaged in the search operation of seven missing fishermen, recovered the body of one of them 16 nautical miles off Jakhho last night. Police said that the body of Osman Latif Jadeja (45), recovered from the sea, had been taken to his native village Okha. Seven fishermen, who left from Dwarka Bet in the Arabian Sea on February 15 for fishing, were reported missing after their boat capsized in the sea. The Boat owner.....
