Govt to correct inverted duty structure: Chandrasekhar

New Delhi, Mar 5 (UNI) The government is committed to correct any inverted duty structures that may have arisen in the Budget to ensure there were no anomalies arising out of reduction of peak customs duty on non-agricultural products.

''However, if detailed working on adverse effects on specific products were provided, the Government would consider them seriously,'' Secretary Department of Revenue K M Chandrasekhar said today at a conference.

Regarding Goods and Services Tax (GST), Mr Chandrasekhar reiterated the commitment of the Government to introduce it by 2010.

He said the experience of states to VAT introduction has been positive and this has enthused them towards GST. He expressed confidence that the roadmap for introducing GST would be in place within the year following consultations with state governments.

The session was also addressed by senior government officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the Central Board of Excise and Customs.
