CII urges TN govt to focus on infrastructure development

Chennai, Mar 5 (UNI) Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Tamil Nadu State Council in its pre-budget proposal to the State Government, today recommended that infrastructure, manufacturing, development, labour reforms and agriculture were some of the thrust areas required for achieving double-digit industrial growth in the State.

In a statement issued here, CII Tamil Nadu Circle Chairman Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu said ''to make Tamil Nadu the 'numero uno' State, more focus on infrastructure development and manufacturing was needed to achieve the industrial growth rate of over ten per cent''.

He said ''presently, Tamil Nadu is the third larget economy among Indian State, growing at six to seven per cent.'' ''CII prescribes a special focus to develop two-tier towns to bring in more investments into the State'', he said adding development of sites and satellite cities in rural areas may be given priority.

Mr Sanjay said CII advocates for Government-Industry forum, for setting up of auto parks, single window agency for environmental clearance and for acceleration of industrial growth in the State.

On the agricultural perspective, CII underlined more focus for agriculture, as it provides livelihood for more than 60 per cent of population in the State.

He said ''CII recommends that State Government clearly notify the items falling under industrial inputs under TN Value Added Tax(VAT) Act''.

Lankan fisherman surrenders before police

Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, Mar 5 (UNI) A Sri Lankan fisherman whose was thrown into the water after his boat capsized in rough seas off the Mimisal Coast of this district surrendered before the local police yesterday. Police said Saghaya Devaraj (44) of Neduntheevu in Jaffna ventured into the sea a couple of days back. Strong winds and rough seas forced him to seek a diversion when his boat capsized. He then managed to reach the Mimisal Coast. UNI.....

Dabhol Block-3 to start tranmission in April:NTPC Director

Kolkata, Feb 23 (UNI) Dabhol Block-3 will start power transmission by April 31 of this year, NTPC Director (Operations) Chandan Roy said here today. Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a seminar, Mr Roy said, ''The second block is currently operating on Naptha. We will also change it to coal by the year end.'' Inflation declines to 6.63 pc

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) The government's proactive role to curb the swelling price rise, has brought down the inflation rate slightly down to 6.63 per cent for the week ended February 10, from a record high of 6.73 per cent in the previous week. The decrease has been attributed to cheaper food articles. The Centre has set up a special monitoring cell to keep a daily watch on the price situation and provide support to state governments as required......
