Centre nod for IISER in Kerala: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 5 (UNI) The Centre has accepted in principle to set up an Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) here, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan informed the State Assembly today.

Replying to a Calling Attention motion by Mr G Karthikeyan (Cong), he said Secretary for Higher Education had been asked to identify a suitable piece land for the project.

Mr Achuthanandan said though the Centre had sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the development of the Government Medical College Hospital here, efforts would be continued to get it elevated to the status of the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS).

Replying to another Calling Attention by Mr Babu M Palissery (CPI-M), Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Vijjayakumar said a petition would be filed before the Supreme Court seeking a review of its judgement imposing controls on noise pollution between 2200 hrs and 0600 hrs as it affected the conduct of festivals in temples, churches and mosques in the state.

He said the Centre would also be requested to bring in necessary amendments to the Act and Rules with regard to noise pollution.

UGC sanctions Rs 30.50 lakh to RSVP

Tirupati, Mar 5 (UNI) The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs 30.50 lakh and two project fellowships to the Department of Sahitya of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (RSVP) under its Special Assistance Programme (SAP). RSVP Vice-Chancellor Hare Krishna Satapathy today said the Sahitya department was selected for SAP for a period of five years with effect from April one, 2007 to March 31, 2012. The UGC had already released an amount of Rs 11 lakh as its first installment, he said.....

Tata Steel bags national safety awards for mines

Jamshedpur, Feb 20 (UNI) Two Tata steel mines have bagged national safety awards for mines for its achievement to become the longest accident free mines in the country, company sources here said. The Centre had conferred the awards to Bheltand mine for being the longest accident free mine for the year 2003 while the Jamadoba mine was adjudged the runners up for the same reason for the year 2002. Two male elephants die of electrocution

Mysore, Mar 5 (UNI) Two male elephants were killed after they came in contact with a live wire at Yelakkuru in Chamarajanagara District early today. Chamarajanagara forest officials said that in all four elephants had entered the farm land of Mariswamy near Santhemaralli last evening and had destroyed standing crops, including sugarcane.
