Ask Centre to give support price to sugarcane farmers: Guj govt

Gandhinagar, Mar 5 (UNI) The Gujarat government today informed the Legislative Assembly the Centre would be asked to give support prices to sugarcane farmers of the state.

The announcement was made by Minister of State C D Patel during the calling attention motion question, raised by Congress MLA Dhansukhbhai Patel.

Mr Patel said the Centre's decision of banning the export of sugarcane was a wrong policy, which has resulted in fall of prices from Rs 1600 per tonne last year to Rs 800 per tonne this year.

However, the state government was taking all remedial steps to ensure good prices to the sugarcane growers. The sugarcane co-operative societies have continued with crushing of the crop from last October.

Earlier, ruling BJP members had alleged the sugarcane export ban has resulted in the price fall as the produce has flooded the local market.
