K'taka: Runaway Mysore techie 'lands' in trouble

Bangalore, Mar 04: This US-based techie of Mysore deserted his wife and fled to the US five years ago to avoid arrest in a dowry case. But he ran out of luck when he landed in Mumbai on Wednesday night from California.

The techie, M K Girish, came to India via Mumbai (not Bangalore) probably thinking his arrival would go unnoticed. But a smart immigration official put a brake on his hopes. The official, who handled Girish's passport, saw his name in the list of people against whom CBI's Interpol wing had issued a red- corner notice and informed his higher-ups.

The official then impounded Girish's passport and handed him over to the Mumbai Police who in turn alerted the Bangalore Police.

Incidentally, a police officer from Bangalore was in Mumbai in connection with another case. He was asked to rush to the airport. And DCP (Central) G B Chebbi sent a team to Mumbai to get Girish here.

According to the police, Girish married a techie, Smitha Rani of Domlur, Bangalore, in 2001. She is the niece of senior IAS officer B H Manjunath.

Girish harassed her for dowry and wanted her father to buy a site, car and other items. When Smitha's father could not meet the demand, Girish harassed her more. One fine day, he fled the country.

Subsequently, Smitha lodged a complaint with the women's police station in Ulsoor Gate. She and her uncle met the then police commissioner and complained to him. The police registered a case and questioned Girish's parents about his whereabouts. On learning that Girish had fled to the USA, Bangalore Police got a red-corner notice issued.
