Great India Bustard population declining in Rajasthan

New Delhi, Mar 3 (UNI) The population of the great Indian bustard is declining in its natural habitat in Rajasthan, according to the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The reason for the fall in numbers was biotic pressure and degradation and reduction in natural grassland habitat, the Ministry said.

One of the rarest birds of Indian subcontinent, the Great Indian Bustard lives in the open country having thorny bushes and tall grass.

More and more grasslands are being used for cultivation, leaving the birds little space. Moreover, due to overgrazing by cattle, there is not enough food to go around for all and gradually the bird's home ceases to exist in the grasslands.

The Ministry said a number of steps were being taken to protect the species which has been placed in Schedule One of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.

The Act has been amended and made more stringent. The punishment in cases of offence against the bustard has been enhanced, with a provision for forfeiture of any equipment, vehicle or weapon that are used by the offender.

Moreover, the important habitats of the threatened bird have been declared as wildlife sanctuaries and financial assistance was being given to states for its protection.

A number of enclosures have been made in the Desert National Park and field staff have been alerted to prevent poaching in their jurisdiction.
