Vadodara, Mar 2 (UNI) A local court today sentenced a self-proclaimed future Acharya of Swaminarayan sect's Vadtal seat to two months imprisonment on the charge of contempt of court order.
Civil Judge (senior division) S Chaudhury convicted Swamy Nugendraprasad Pandey on a petition filed by Vadtal Swaminarayan Mandir Trust, which in May, 2002, had removed Nugendra's father Ajendraprasad Pandey from the post of Acharya of the Vadtal Swaminarayan sect and appointed Rakeshprasad Maharaj in his place.
Ajendraprasad, while fighting a legal battle to regain his supremacy over the Vadtal sect, was named in a sex-on-CD scam, unearthed in February, 2005, by the crime branch of the Ahmedabad police and since then, the father-son duo were absconding.
However, the fight for the Vadtal seat intensified further in 2004, when the dismissed Acharya and his son declared themselves as the Acharya and future Acharya respectively and they went ahead with their plan to organise a Dharma Sabha of the Swaminarayan sect at Polo ground here. But a city court granted an injunction on a petition filed by the Trust and refrained the duo from holding any such religious gathering in the capacity of Vadtal Acharya.
In June 2006, Vadtal Swaminarayan Mandir Trust moved the court after Swamy Nugendra performed a 'murti sthapana' ceremony at Etola village in Vadodara and proclaimed himself as the future Acharya of Vadtal sect.
Delivering his verdict, Judge Chaudhury found Swamy Nugendra guilty of breach of court order and sentenced him to two months imprisonment.
Last year, the Gujarat High Court had dismissed a petition filed by former Acharya Ajendraprasad Pandey challenging his dismissal and appointment of Rakeshprasad Maharaj as the new Acharya of Vadtal Swaminarayan sect.
Ajendraprasad has, however, gone underground since February, 2005, after Ahmedabad police seized 116 sex CDs along with many incriminating documents following raids on his houses in Vadtal and Vallabh Vidyanagar.
Police have already arrested four persons, including a Swaminarayan priest from Junagadh, who was caught having sex with a woman in one of the CDs.
