Mumbai, Mar 3 (UNI) City police have arrested drug addict and street dweller Salim Sheikh, on charges of attempting to murder of a migrant from Lucknow near Grant Road station last Saturday.
Police today said the victim, Raju Gupta (20), who is recuperating at the Nair hospital, identified Salim (25) as the person who stabbed him on February 25. Gupta was found in a semi-conscious state by the Railway Police between Mumbai Central and Grant Road stations. He sustained severe stab injuries and was rushed to the nearby Nair Hospital.
He testified before the investigators that Shaikh had offered him a job and both had dined together before going to sleep. Later, the accused went to the toilet from where he returned armed with a knife and stabbed him, police said.
On January 13, a man in his 30s was found murdered near the tracks at Grant Road station. Similarly, last Saturday, another body was found near the tracks at Grant Road with half a dozen stab injuries. In both the cases, the modus operandi of the accused was similar, as the victims were lured to isolated locations before being attacked or killed.
Meanwhile, the D B Marg police station has begun investigations and has registered a case of attempt to murder against Shaikh under the Indian Penal Code(IPC).
Accused Salim, who was arrested on Thursday, speaks Bengali, which has left the city police with a new task of finding the exact nationality and identity before proceeding further.
