Swamy condemns budget for ignoring basic problems plaguing economy

Chennai, Mar 2 (UNI) Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today strongly condemned the Union Budget for 2007-'08 presented by Finance minister P Chidambaram as just a poor collage of some ''proposals'' for vested interests.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr Swamy, a former Commerce Minister, lamented that the budget has ignored the basic problems that plague facing the economy.

He also charged that the 30 per cent duty for dog and cat pet food was to oblige a relative of the Congress President who was exporting pet foods of a British company to India.

While, who welcoming the setting up of retail outlets by multinationals, like Reliance, provided they used their profits to help the rural farmers, he charged that the Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) on IT companies would be a disaster. It would be a betrayal to the software companies as two years ago these companies were encouraged to invest, on expectations promise of zero tax till 2010.

He criticised the increase the cess tax for education to 3 per cent. In the last three years, only 18 per cent of the tax was spent on education. The rest was used up in revenue expenditure.

Meanwhile, Dr Swamy said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to forward a petition by Hindu Munnani to President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Durga temple to close during Lunar eclipse

Vijayawada, Mar 2 (UNI) The famed Sri Durga Malleswaraswamy devasthanam atop Indrakeeladri will be closed from the evening of March three in view of the Lunar eclipse. A devasthanam official told UNI the temple would be closed from 1830 hrs tomorrow to 0700 hrs on Sunday. The temple doors would be opened on Sunday at 0730 hrs and after purfication of goddess Kanakadurga, the pilgrims would be allowed for darshan from 1100 hrs on March 4, he added. Return of Army only after peace in Kashmir: Governor

Jammu, Mar 14 (UNI) Rejecting the demand of demilitarisation, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt General (Retd) S K Sinha today said the Army will return to barracks once peace returns to the terrorism-plagued state. ''Every other day terrorists kill innocent people and how can their security be put in jeopardy,'' the Governor said while interacting with a group of elders here this morning after their return from 'Watten Ki Seir' organised by the Army under Operation Sadhbavna. Temperature rises in parts of AP

Hyderabad, Mar 2 (UNI) The mercury rose in some parts of Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours even as night temperatures continued to be below normal elsewhere in the State. Anantapur, Kurnool and Tirupathi Airport recorded a high of 37 degrees Celsius, while Medak had a low of 18 degrees Celsius, the Weather office here said. Dry weather prevailed over the state. The maximum temperature was above normal at a few places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema and.....
