Bangalore, Mar 2 (UNI) The Karnataka Government today ordered the merciless killing of ferocious and rabid stray dogs following the fatal attack on two kids in the city in two months.
A pack of dogs had mauled to death four-year-old Manjunath at BEML layout here yesterday, after a similar tragedy involving six-year-old Sridevi in Chandra Layout was reported a couple of months ago.
Briefing newspersons here after a meeting with top officials of the Bangalore City Corporation here, Health and Family Welfare Minister R Ashok said the authorities had been strictly instructed to kill dogs if they were found in packs, besides rabid and sick ones.
The State Government had no permission to kill dogs under the existing laws. However, the State Government would seek the Centre to suitably amend the laws in this regard, he added.
Replying to a volley of questions, the Minister said public places such as railway stations, religious places, markets and bus stands would be guarded against the menace. The authorities had identified 48 areas under three zones of the corporation limits where the menace was more and stringent action would be initiated, he added.
Mr Ashok said the authorities had killed over 600 dogs in Chandra Layout where the first such incident was reported. The Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences had been asked to take up an in depth study of stray dogs, covering various aspects including the role of Non Governmental Organisations in ensuring sterilisation of dogs, and submit a report to the Government by March-end. The Government would initiate follow up action after receiving the report, he assured, stating that he would also consider filing criminal charges against irresponsible officials and NGOs if they were found guilty.
Corporation Commissioner K Jairaj, who was also present, said unauthorised mutton shops and pavement hawkers were banned in the attack prone areas of the three zones.
Bharat Earth Movers Limited Chairman V R S Natarajan called on Mr Ashok and assured to initiate action against stray dogs in the BEML Layout. The State Government had also sought the Defence Ministry to hand over the 134 acres of land to the city corporation for maintenance, he said.
