Justice A K Ganguly sworn in as Chief Justice of Orissa HC

Cuttack, Mar 2(UNI) Justice A K Ganguly, who has been officiating as acting Chief Justice, was today sworn in as the new chief justice of Orissa High Court.

Orissa Governor Rameswar Thakur administered oath of office and secrecy to Justice Ganguly at a simple function on the court premises in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, State Law Minister B B Harichandan, all High Court judges and members of the bar including the state advocate general B K Mahanti.

Justice Ganguly was officiating as the acting Chief Justice of the High Court since January 28 after the retirement of his predecessor Justice Sujit Barman Roy.

Born on February 3, 1947, Justice Ganguly obtained degree in Law from Calcutta University in 1970 and enrolled as an advocate in December 1971.

He was appointed as a permanent judge of Kolkata High Court in July 1994 and transferred to Patna High Court where he served for more than six years.

Justice Ganguly was again transferred to Kolkata High Court in August 2000 and while serving as the senior most judge in the Kolkata High Court, he was transferred to Orissa High Court in April 2006.

Chennai, Mar 17:  Officials of the South Zone Unit of the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) have unearthened a heroin smuggling racket following detention of two Singapore bound air passengers, at Anna International Airport here last night.Zonal Director, NCB Davidson Deva Aasirvatham, said acting on a tip off, a team led by him went to the airport and made a thorough check of passengers and their baggages, on the Chennai-Singapore Indian Airlines flight. SC declines to entertain PIL against DSP for torturing Afzal

New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) The Supreme Court today declined to entertain a PIL seeking registration of a case against a DSP of Special Task Force (STF), who had confessed in a TV interview that he had tortured Mohammad Afzal Guru, awarded death sentence in the Parliament attack case. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendaran severely reprimanded the petitioner, Centre for PIL for filing a frivolous PIL.
