Committee for modernisation of museums holds first meeting

New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) A high-level committee constituted for modernisation of museums by the Ministry of Culture met informally for the first time here today to discuss modernisation of some of the museums in the country to bring them on par with the best in the world.

The meeting was convened by the Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni. Secretary Culture is the Chairman of the 14-member committee.

The terms of the reference of the committee are : --To formulate the requirements/eligibility criteria, Terms of Reference, draft advertisement etc. for invitation of expression of interest from internationally reputed consultants.

--Select consultants based on the above criteria.

--Interact with selected consultants and give them broad guidance to enable them prepare detailed project reports for modernisation/up-gradation of the identified museums to international standards.

All the members expressed concern at the present status of museums in the country and suggested the need for structural changes to make them autonomous, responsive and interesting place for public to visit.

The next meeting of the committee will be held after two weeks.

Shigmotsav showcasing rich Indian culture enthralls all

Panaji, Mar 10 (UNI) Shigmotsav, showcasing the rich traditional Indian culture and communal harmony, got underway here today, enthralling thousands of spectators. The event, organised by Panaji Shigmotsav Samiti, was assisted by the Directorate of Tourism, Government of Goa. More than 50 floats, besides several cultural troupes, participated in the annual parade. The participants sang bhajans, and performed dances to drum beats. India, Italy sign Cultural Exchange Programme

New Delhi, Feb 20 (UNI) Deepening their cultural ties, India and Italy have signed a cultural exchange Programme (CEP), 2007-2009, envisaging cooperation in restoration and protection of cultural heritage, countering illicit trade in works of art and facilitating exchanges of academicians of their respective universities. Anita Desai, Duggal, Kelekar elected Sahitya Akademi's Fellows

New Delhi, Feb 20 (UNI) Famed litterateurs Anita Desai (English), Kartar Singh Duggal (Punjabi) and Ravindra Kelekar (Konkani) have been elected ''Fellows'' of the Sahitya Akademi -- the highest honour of the Akademi -- while Britain-based Prof. R E Asher has become its 'Honorary Fellow'. The Sahitya Akademi's 'Fellow' is reserved for the ''immortals of literature' and limited to twenty-one only at any given time. The Akademi's constitution also provides for electing 'Honorary Fellows' from among literary persons of outstanding.....
