Cauvery protests enter 26th day

Mysore, Mar 2 (UNI) Agitations and protests have become the order of the day in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar for the 26th consecutive day today following the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal pronouncing its verdict.

In the Cauvery heartland of Mandya, the agitation spearheaded by the Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi continued. The Milk Producers Association and other organisations took out a procession in the town against the award. The relay hunger strike by the Samithi at Silver Jubilee Park continued and fasts were also organised at Srirangapatna, K R Pet and Pandavapura. Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Deputy Commissioner.

In Mysore, a mock court was held at K R circle, taking a dig at the ''injustice'' done to Karnataka by the Tribunal. Workers of the Government silk factory and Karnataka silk industries, Kodagu Gowda Samaja, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, activists of Mysore City Autorickshaw Association Action Committee and students of various schools joined the agitation.

In Chamarajanagar district, various religious heads, including Bishops and Mullas, took out a padayatra in Kollegal town, urging the Union Government to intervene in the issue.

Transport policy for rural areas

Bhopal, Mar 15 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh Government will formulate a policy to improve transport facilities in rural areas, Transport Minister Himmat Kothari told the Assembly today. Replying to the budgetary demands for 2007-08 for the Transport department, Mr Kothari said the government had started providing driving licenses in schools and getting vehicles registered through dealers on an experiment basis. He described the government's decision to shut down the Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Department as appropriate saying it was necessary.....

Lokayukta complaints against police inefficiency

Madikeri, Mar 2 (UNI) Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde has lodged a complaint with the State Government against inaction of Kodagu police who failed to respond in time following a road mishap near madikeri last week. In his complaint, he alleged that he was stranded on road for hours together due to an accident followed by road block and Police did not act with speed and efficiency. Bangalore, Mar 2 (UNI) A three-day Asia Pacific Congress on Infectious Diseases and Infection Control--ACIDIC 2007 began with Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa inaugurating it here today. More than 150 delegates from Asia-Pacific countries are participating in the Congress organised under the auspices of Narayana Hrudayalaya's Institute of Medical Sciences and Organ Transplantation here.
