User charges in Barber shops opposed

Tirupati, Mar 1 (UNI) Sri Raghavendra Nayi Brahmana Sangham today opposed the Andhra Pradesh government's proposed move to impose user charges on barber shops in municipal towns.

Sangham president Y V Ramana told UNI that the move to levy user charges would affect the livlihood of Nayi Brahmins, who were earning through traditional profession.

The user charge of Rs 500 on saloon is already in vogue in Hyderabad corporation limits.

Scaffolding collapsed, ten injured

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Mar 1 (UNI) Ten people were injured when a scaffolding collapsed at the famous Adi Kumbeswarar temple at Kumbakonam in this district today. Police said devotees had thronged the temple in view of the ongoing 'Masi Maham' festival when the wooden scaffolding erected between the temple chariot and 'mandapam' collapsed. Estate Employees Association volunteers arrested

Puducherry, Mar 1 (UNI) About 52 volunteers of the Industrial Estate Employees Association, affiliated to the CITU, were arrested today when they tried to picket the labour office here to press their demands. Their demands included immediate transfer of the Labour Mediatory Officer, alleging that he was an 'anti-labourer' taking unilateral decisions which would benifit the industry owners. Meanwhile, Members of the Puducherry State Electricity Department Employees Union observed a fast infront of the head office demanding appointments on compassionate grounds,.....

More than 5 lakh students to appear for SSLC exams in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 1 (UNI) As many as 5,05,201 students will be appearing in this year's SSLC examinations, commencing on March 14. Of this 2,31,569 candidates are girls. The total number of candidates in the SC/ST category, who have registered for the examination was 47,568, Kerala Education Minister M A Baby told reporters here today. There would be 2,712 examination centres this year. Of this, 16 were in the Gulf region and nine in the Lakshadweep islands. All arrangements had been.....
