UPA should increase funds for agriculture sector: AIKS

Vijayawada, Mar 1 (UNI) The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) today demanded that the UPA government should increase the funds in Central Budget for the agriculture sector.

Talking at a press conference here, AIKS Vice-President Kolli Nageswara Rao said the funds allocated towards agriculture in the Union Budget presented in Parliament yesterday by Finance Minister P Chidambaram would not stop the suicide spree of farmers in the country.

In the Budget, it was announced that the allocation of funds for crop loans had been increased from 1.95 crore to 2.25 crore and additional crop loans would be given to 50 lakh farmers this year.

As the number of farmers in the country is more than 11 crore, all of them would not get the additional crop loans, he added.

The Centre which abrogated the crop loans of industrialists and capitalists by giving Rs three lakh crore to the banks was 'indifferent' in the case of poor farmers, as it had not allotted Rs 50,000 crore for the purpose.

With this type of allocations in the Budget, it was impossible to achieve nine per cent GDP growth or four per cent agriculture development, Mr Rao opined.

In Andhra Pradesh alone, the Budget earmarked an amount of Rs 13,000 crore for irrigation projects but the allocation of Rs 11,000 crore by the Centre towards the projects would not serve any purpose.

He said at present the farmers were incuring loss due to the crop insurance scheme.
