Promotion of non-farm sector for poverty eradication

Jaipur, Mar 1 (UNI) Promotion of non-farm sectors is necessary for poverty eradication in rural communities, speakers at a seminar here said.

Chairman and Managing Director, RUDA Rahit Brandon said promotion of non-farm sectors like handloom and handicraft would go a long way in empowering the rural poor and attacking poverty. He said this should be promoted by community participation and assuring access to adequate markets.

Mr Brandon said this while participating in a workshop on ''Promoting greater role of the panchayati raj institutions in Rajasthan to foster rural livlihood opportunities :meeting the challenges of globalisation and economic liberalisation'organised by CUTS an NGO here yesterday.

Speaking on the ocassion Jaipur Zilla Pramukh Ram Gopal Gaurd emphasised the need for effective implementation of the anti-poverty programmes. He also stressed on the imperative of the active involvement of grassroot democratic institutions like the panchayati raj institutions.

Reconstruct Dharampur-Sabathu Bridge

Solan, Mar 1 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh Government has directed the Railway authorities to re-construct the Dharampur-Sabathu Bridge at the earliest for which a sum of Rs 10 lakh had already been released. A Bailey Bridge could also be constructed at the site to allow movement of railway traffic, in case sufficient time was required to construct a new bridge here, state Chief Secretary S S Parmar said at a meeting called to review the situation due to the unsafe.....

Akalis not impressed with agri concessions in Budget

Chandigarh, Mar 1 (UNI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has described the Union Budget 2007-08 as lackluster saying it has failed to address the problem of rising inflation and the agricultural crisis crippling the country's farmers.
