Life imprisonment to three persons in Jharkhand

Bokaro, Mar 1 (UNI) A fast track court today awarded life imprisonment to three persons accused of murder in Jharkhand's Bokaro district.

Additional and Session Judge (1st) S K Choudhuri also imposed Rs 500 as fine on each of the accused--Bablu Bakira, Munna Bari and Bhola Sarma--who murdered Devendra Ram Mahto of Basti Mor under Harla police station in February, 2004.

Police said the victims on February 16, 2004 night did not return home. The worried family members next day informed police who found that Devendra was with the three accused that night.

Further investigation led the police to recover his body on February 19 from cooling pond in the steel city.

It was established that the trio had killed Mahto and threw the body into the pond.

Shanta Sinha to head National Commission for child rights

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) Magasaysay Award winner children rights activist Shanta Sinha has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights which is tasked with examining all matters relating to children in a holistic manner. The Commission would examine all factors inhibiting the enjoyment of rights by children affected by terrorism, communal violence, riots, natural disaster, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, trafficking, maltreatment, torture and exploitation, pornography and prostitution and recommend appropriate remedial measures. Restrictions lifted on suspended Pakistani judge

Islamabad, Mar 17:  Pakistani authorities have lifted restrictions on the country's suspended top judge, one of his lawyers said today, a day after protesters and police clashed on the streets of the capital and in other cities.The suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary on March 9 has outraged lawyers and united disparate opposition parties against President Pervez Musharraf, who is expected to seek another term late this year.Lawyers were meeting in the eastern city of Lahore to discuss the case today.....
