Lankan Army plane crashes; trainer, instructor killed

Colombo, Mar 1 (UNI) A Chinese-built trainer aircraft of the Sri Lankan Air Force today crashed at Anuradhapura airfield killing the two personnel onboard.

''A Chinese-built PT-6 trainer aircraft of the Lankan Air Force crashed inside the Anuradhapura air base around 1215 hrs (local time) today. Both the trainer and the instructor have been killed in the crash,'' Air Force spokesman, Group Captain Ajantha Silva told UNI.

''Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Roshan Gunatillake has immediately appointed a top committee to investigate into the crash,'' he added.

The Lankan Air Force jets have been carrying out stepped up campaign against the LTTE, regularly pounding ''suspected LTTE targets'' in the Northern and Eastern region.

Meanwhile, the Israeli-built Kfir jets of the Sri Lankan Air Force pounded an ''identified LTTE training camp'' about 15 km west of Mankulam in the rebel-held Wanni region.

Bhutto turns down Sharif's Multi-Parties Conference

Islamabad, Mar 2 (UNI) Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has refused to attend the Multi-Parties Conference (MPC) to be held in London on March 24 by Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief Nawaz Sharif. Ms Bhutto, conveying her decision to the PML, said she would send her party delegation for representation. Ms Bhutto's refusal to attend Sharif's MPC came in the backdrop of reports about a deal between the PPP and Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf.....

Cauvery issue; AIADMK to organise statewide fast in 2 phases

Chennai, Mar 13 (UNI) The opposition AIADMK in Tamil Nadu will organise a statewide fast in two phases to condemn the Central and State Governments for ''betraying'' the state's interest in the contentious Cauvery issue. AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa will observe a day-long fast near Valluvar Kottam here on March 18, while the agitation will be held in other district headquarters on March 21, according to a revised schedule released by the party headquarters here.
