India, Cuba to cooperate in renewable energy

New Delhi, Mar 01 (UNI) India and Cuba will cooperate in the field of renewable energy and have agreed to renew the Protocol of Cooperation in Renewable Energy for another two years.

This was decided at the Sixth Session of the Inter-Governmental Commission for Economic, Technical and Scientific Collaboration between the two countries in Havana, an official spokesman said here today.

The two countries have also agreed to increase exchange in areas of wind energy and bio-technology as part of the conclusion of the Sixth Session of the Inter-governmental Joint Commission.

While Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma led the Indian delegation at the talks on February 13, the Cuban side was headed by Marta Lomas, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Economic Collaboration.

Cuba also offered knowledge in the production of energy from sugarcane waste.

Considering the importance of renewable energy and the development achieved by the two countries, India will arrange a specific training programme in wind energy for 15 Cuban experts under ITEC Programme.

An Indian delegation will visit Cuba to see the area of co-generation using Bagasse in Sugar Mills, the spokesman said.

Bhopal gas leak survivors threaten hunger strike from March 5

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) Survivors of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy and their supporters today threatened to launch an indefinite hunger-strike from March 5 if their long-pending demands of cleaning up of the environment, clean drinking water, medical care and social rehabilitation were not immediately met. Representatives of the survivors, who have been on protest in Bhopal, charged the Madhya Pradesh government with obstructing medical care and rehabilitation. No extradition treaty exists between India and Argentina: CBI

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) The CBI, in its affidavit filed today in the Supreme Court, has reiterated that no extradition treaty exists between India and Argentina. The government has also vehemently denied the allegation that it deliberately concealed the arrest of Ottavio Quattrocchi, the main suspect in the Rs 64 crore Bofors gun kickbacks scandal, by Argentinian authorities on February 6 this year. The government has also admitted that it had the information of the arrest of the Italian fugitive.....
