IGNOU to set up 8,000 tele-knowledge centres in rural areas

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) As part of the eleventh plan proposal, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is planning to set up 8,000 tele-knowledge centres in rural areas.

IGNOU VC Rajasekharan Pillai said the centres will disseminate information about the need for sustainable development of rural and underprivileged regions and groups.

''The objective of the programme is to bring about rural prosperity by looking at various issues to ensure that there are no negative effects of technology in the country side and new technology can be harnessed for sustainable development of the rural areas,'' he added.

The Board of Management has approved the institution of the chair in sustainable development with eminent agriculture scientist Prof M S Swaminathan as the honorary chair.

Another chilly day in Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) A day after the capital was lashed by moderate to heavy showers, which plummeted the mercury by nearly five degrees Celsius, Delhiites today woke up to another chilly day with the weathermen forecasting a few more spells of rainfall later tonight or tomorrow. The minimum temperature today dropped to 14.9 degrees Celsius, from over 16 degrees C yesterday. FIR registerd against Dy CM Patil in Sangli district

Sangli, Maharashtra, Mar 8 (UNI) A First Information Report (FIR) was registered today against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil for allegedly using pressure tactics and threatening a candidate to withdraw his nomination papers from the Panchayat Samiti elections in the district. The case has been registered against Mr Patil and Sanjay Patil, a new entrant into NCP, under section 171 (f), 342, 506 (34) with Tasgaon police, police sources said. Women groups disappionted with low Budget outlay

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) Expressing disappointment with the Budget, women groups today said it has practically nothing for women as Rs 8795 crore allocation made for fair sex was totally inadequate and no funds were allocated for implementation of laws protecting women. Ms Ranjana Kumari, President of Women Power Connect, a coalition of women NGOs, told UNI that the budgetary provisions for women, who constitute 50% population, was just about 0.01% of the total annual Budget. Moreover, no special measures.....
