Eight killed in landmine blast in Chhattisgarh

Jagdalpur, Mar 1 (UNI) Eight people, including four jawans of the Naga battalion, were killed on the spot when a truck in which they were travelling hit a landmine laid by the Naxalites near Darbaguda on Jagdalpur-Hyderabad road in the tribal Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.

Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) R K Vij told UNI that four constables of the Naga Battalion, accompanied by two special police officers (SPO) were returning after patrolling duty. They boarded a truck which was on way to Darbhaguda.

At about 0830 hours, the truck hit a landmine and all of them were killed on the spot. The driver and cleaner of the truck were among the dead.

Mr Vij said security forces have been despatched to the spot to carryout combing operations in the nearby forests.

High Court reduces Monica's jail term to 3 yrs

Hyderabad, Mar 8 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh High Court today reduced the jail term of former starlet Monica Bedi in a fake passport case from five years to three years. Mr Justice B Seshasayana Reddy said while delivering the judgement, he had also took into account Bedi's detention period of nine months in Portugal. Special Court of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier awarded Bedi, an associate of gangster Abu Salem, five years jail term in the case. UNI.....

Lashker militant arrested alongwith arms in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 1 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a militant of Pakistan based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) alongwith arms and ammunition in south Kashmir today. A police spokesman said police conducted a search operation at Heff in Pulwama district of South Kashmir this morning. During the operation, LeT militant Showkat Ahmad Tantray was arrested. An and a hand grenade were recovered from his possession, he said. UNI.....

HC adjourns case against Taslima Nasreen

Chennai, Mar 8 (UNI) Madras High Court today adjourned to next week the hearing on a petition seeking to register a case against controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen for her alleged defamatory and blasphemous statements on Islam. When the petition filed by Tamil Nadu Muslim Makkal Katchi President S M Pasha came for hearing before Justice K N Basha, Additional Public Prosecutor Kumaresan sought time for getting instructions from the Commissioner of Police, Chennai. Following this, the judge adjourned the hearing.....
