Care India Honoured For Helping Dropouts

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) CARE India has been honoured with the Commonwealth Education Good Practice Award in recognition of its initiatives for dropouts and for never-enrolled-girls, it was officially stated today.

The Award was handed over yesterday by Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandareswari to Girls Education Programme Director Kokila Gulati, the statement said.

Ms Gulati was accompanied by CARE Country Director Marge Tsitouris, Technical Support-Education F A Jami and Communications Officer Amelia Andrews.

Purandareswari received the Award on CARE India's behalf at the 16th Commonwealth Education Ministers Conference in Cape Town, South Africa to which she led the Indian delegation in December 2006.

The humanitarian group was among nine finalists from seven Commonwealth nations and the only finalist from the Asian region picked by a Pan Commonwealth jury.

Former MLA's son shot dead in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Mar 8 (UNI) The son of a former MLA was shot dead by a criminal following a scuffle at Chakradharpur in Jharkhand's Chaibasa district today. Police said Laxman Hemboram was the son of former MLA Sukhdev Hembrom. Police nabbed the assailant from the scene of crime, about 30 km from Chaibasa, and identified him as Ratan Kiu. Rainfall revives chilly conditions

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) A snowslide killed a Junior Commissioned Officer at a forward post in Poonch district today. Subedar Ghana Oaron, a Vir Chakra awardee, got buried under a snowslide late while performing his duty, a spokesman said. Shimla and its adjoining areas experienced fresh snowfall early today plummeting temperatures and intensifying cold wave conditions in Himachal Pradesh. Fast Track Court frames charges in Papiya murder case

Patna Mar 8 (UNI) A Fast Track Court today framed charges against five criminals, accused of killing noted professor Papiya Ghosh and her maid. The court of Omprakash framed the charges under IPC 396 and 412. Some criminals had entered the residence of Ms Ghosh on December 2, 2000 with the motive of committing dacoity. The criminals stabbed Ms Ghosh and her maid following resistance from them. UNI.....
