Winter vacation in Kargil extended, Drass road closed due to snow

Kargil, Feb 28 (UNI) All the educational institutions in Kargil district will remain closed till March 5 because of heavy snowfall leading to the closure of Drass-Kargil road.

The announcement to extend the winter vacation in the Kargil district was made by a spokesman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil.

The schools were scheduled to reopen tomorrow alongwith the schools of Kashmir division.

Official sources said Kargil-Drass road, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, has been closed for traffic because of about one feet of snowfall.

However, other roads to far flung and remote areas remained open.

Army-IAF launches 'Opn Hamsafar' to ferry stranded passengers

Jammu, Feb 28 (UNI) The Army and Air Force today launched 'Operation Hamsafar' to airlift the stranded passengers, caught up on the 300-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway since its blockade seven days ago due to landslides triggered by rains, to their destinations in Jammu and Srinagar. Rain, snow hit HP, Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, Feb 28 (UNI) Moderate to heavy snowfall occured in Himachal Pradesh while lower areas of the hilly state and plains of Punjab and Haryana received widespread rains since last night, reviving wintry conditions at most places in the region. Shimla and upper areas of the district had another spell of snowfall, preceded and followed by intermittent rain.
