TN CM expresses concern over indiscriminate firings by SL Navy

Chennai, Feb 28 (UNI) In his second letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in as many days, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today expressed concern over the ''indiscriminate firings'' by Sri Lankan Navy on Tamil fishermen which caused ''a lot of tension'' in the coastal areas of the state.

''I will be thankful if urgent action is taken with a view to preventing such undesirable incidents,'' he said in the letter, a copy of which was circulated to the media here.

The Chief Minister had yesterday shot off a demi official letter to Dr Singh about the series of incidents causing distress to the fishermen in Tamil Nadu by the Lankan Navy.

In today's letter, he drew the Prime Minister's attention to another incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tamil fishermen yesterday.

When four fishermen went into the sea in a country boat for fishing from Sangumal coast in Ramanathapuram district, the Lankan Navy resorted to firing in which one fisherman, Xavier (26), was injured.

He had been admitted to a Government hospital for treatment, Mr Karunanidhi said.

Budget session of Kerala Assembly to begin on Mar 2

Rs 500 crore earmarked for commonwealth games in budget

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Finance Minister P Chidambaram has provided Rs 150 crore to the Ministry of Youth Affaors amd Sports and Rs 350 crore to the Delhi government in 2007-08 for the Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi in the year 2010. He also proposed to provide Rs 50 crore for the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 to be held in Pune. UNI.....

Ad valorem on petrol and diesel reduced from 8 to 6 per cent

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Finance Minister P Chidambaram today proposed to reduce the ad valorem component of Excise Duty on petrol and diesel from 8 per cent to 6 per cent. Presenting the General Budget 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha, the Minister proposed to grant relief from excise duty in deserving cases especially the job creating sectors. He also raised the exemption limit for small scale industry from Rs one crore to 1.5 crore; biscuits whose retail sale price does.....
