Suicide rate among Indians community in Dubai up by 10%

Dubai, Feb 28 (UNI) Suicide rate among the Indian community in Dubai has increased by ten per cent over the last year, the Indian Consulate has reported.

The number of deaths registered last year rose to 1,157, compared to 971 in 2005 with 100 victims committing suicide, a spokesman said.

The consulate, which attributed the increase to the growing number of Indians in the UAE, is investigating reasons for the dramatic increase in both deaths and suicides.

The consul also dealt with 1,408 labour cases last year, up from 760 in 2005 and sheltered 41 destitute women or runaway maids who had fled their homes and employers.

Kerala to press Union Govt for increased central investments

Wollongong varsity announces 9 scholarships to Indian students

Chennai, Mar 14 (UNI) The University of Wollongong, Australia, has announced nine scholarships worth about Rs 30 lakh to Indian students as part of the Wollongong International coursework scholarship scheme. The scholarships are designed to encourage high achieving students opting for Wollongong University's most popular courses. Kerala not to withdraw arrack ban: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 14 (UNI) Kerala Excise Minister P K Gurudasan today informed the Assembly that the government had no plan to withdraw the arrack ban in the state. Replying to questions by Mr N Anirudhan and others, he said the ban was imposed 12 years ago and the government had no plan to withdraw it. However, he clarified that the government would never deviate from its declared policy of action against illicit arrack and assured that it would take stern action.....
