Service tax exemption limit raised for small service providers

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Finance Minister P Chidambaram has proposed to raise the Service Tax exemption limit for small service providers from Rs 4,00,000 to Rs 8,00,000.

While presenting the General Budget 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister said the revenue loss on this will be Rs 800 crore. He, however, said he was happy to give away this sum in the interest of small service providers and the counsumers.

Mr Chidambaram also proposed to extend the Service Tax to: services outsourced by mining of mineral, oil or gas, renting of immovable property for use in commerce or business, development and supply of content for use in telecom and advertising purposes, asset management services provided by individuals, and design services.

The Finance Minister has also proposed to levy Service Tax on services involved in the execution of a works contract. He proposed an optional composition scheme under which service tax will be levied at only 2 per cent of the total value of the works contract.

Service Tax is exempted on services provided by Resident Welfare Associations to their members who ctontribute Rs 3000 or less per month for services rendered. No service tax on all services provided by technology business incubators. Their incubates whose annual business turnover does not exceed Rs 50 lakh will be exempted from service tax for the first three years.

The Finance Minister also proposed to exempt clinical trial of new drugs from service tax.

Two get 5 years RI in robbery case

Vadodara, Mar 6 (UNI) A Vadodara fast-track court today sentenced two robbers from Patna to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for looting a jewellery shop at Anand in March 2005. Presiding fast-track judge V J Mehta, who pronounced the verdict, sentenced Ashish Yadav and Pankaj Kumar to five years imprisonment and also fined them Rs 2,000. national means cum-merit scholarship scheme introduced

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Government today announced to introduce a new National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme to arrest the drop out ratio and encourage students to continue their education beyond class-VIII. Presenting the Union Budget for 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister, P Chidambaram said under the new scheme, each student would be given Rs.6,000 per year for study in classes IX, X, XI and XII. One more arrested for attack on BJP activist

Pune, Mar 6 (UNI) Police today arrested one more person in connection with the brutal attack on a local BJP leader, Shashikant Shitole. Shitole, an aspiring candidate for the upcoming zilla parishad elections, was attacked by assailants yesterday who had chopped off his hands. Police had arrested two persons -- Vijay Jagtap and Dhananjay Dore yesterday itself in connection with the attack. A third person, Amit Anil Pasaranikar (22), was arrested today.
