Protests continue in Cauvery basin districts

Mysore, Feb 28 (UNI) Protests have become the order of the day in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar in Karnataka since the Cauvery Water Distputes Tribunal pronounced its verdict on February five.

In Mandya, protests continued at Maddur, Mandya, K R Pet, Pandavapura and Srirangapatna where farmers staged ''rasta roko'' for some time and took out processions against the award. However, traffic movement on the Mysore-Bangalore highway was not affected.

The relay hunger strike at Mandya, Pandavapura, Srirangapatna and K R Pet by the Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi continued.

In Mysore, members of the City Hoteliers Association and the owners of bakeries and sweetmeat stalls took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Convicts seek retrial

Mumbai, Mar 6 (UNI) A group of 68 convicts in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case today moved the TADA court here, seeking a retrial and review of their cases. In their application, Zakir Hussain and 67 other convicts claimed that the members of the Memon family, who had allegedly masterminded the blasts, cine star Sanjay Dutt and other bomb planters were the prime accused involved in the case. Exemption limit for cash transaction raised to Rs 50,000

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The exemption limit for individuals and HUFs under the Banking Cash Transactions Tax (BCTT) has been raised to Rs 50,000 from Rs 25,000. Cash withdrawals by the Central and State Government have been excluded from the scope of BCTT. Finance Minister P Chidambaram while presenting the Union Budget for 2007-08 in Lok Sabha today said that as other instruments become more effective, it would be possible to review the provision next year. Angadia workers robbed of valuables worth Rs 11 lakh

Rajkot, Mar 6 (UNI) Four armed men robbed angadias of valuables worth Rs 11 lakh near Maliaya-Miyana on Rajkot-Bhuj highway, police said. The incident occurred at 2030 hrs last night in a Gujarat State Roadways Transport bus enroute to Batwa from Narayan Sarovar in Kutch district, police sources said.
