No change in personal income tax rates

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) No changes have been made in the current slabs and rates of personal income tax in the Budget 2007-08.

However, every assessee has been given a relief of Rs 1,000 by raising the threshold limit of exemption by Rs 10,000.

Consequently, in the case of a woman assessee, the threshold limit has been raised to Rs 1,45,000 from Rs 1,35,000. In the case of a senior citizen, such limit has been raised from 1,85,000 to Rs 1,95,000, effecting a relief of Rs 2,000, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in his General Budget.

The reduction in respect of medical insurance premium under section 80D has been increased to a maximum of Rs 15,000 and in the case of a senior citizen, a maximum of Rs 20,000.

Backward regions fund allocation increased to Rs 5800 crore

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Finance Minister P Chidambaram today proposed to increase the allocation for Backward Regions Grant Fund to Rs 5800 crore from Rs 5000 crore. Presenting the 2007-08 Budget proposals in the Lok sabha Mr Chidambaram said this would finance two components- one pertaining to 250 districts and the other pertaining to special plan for Bihar. Cricket match dispute claims 3 lives

Aligarh, Mar 6 (UNI) A minor dispute between two groups of children playing cricket in Chandaus area here conflagrated into firing, claiming three lives, besides grievous wounds to two others. Capital markets initiatives in Budget

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) In line with measures announced every year to strengthen the capital markets, Finance Minister P Chidambaram proposed in the Budget 2007-08: * PAN to be made sole identification number for all participants in securities market with an alpha-numeric prefix or suffix to distinguish a particular kind of account; * Idea of Self Regulating Organisations (SRO) to be taken forward for different market participants under regulations to be made by SEBI; * Mutual funds to be permitted.....
