National Rural Employment guarantee Scheme to be expanded

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) will be expanded from the current level of 200 districts to 330 districts.

The Government has proposed to make an initial allocation of Rs 12,000 crore (including NER component) for the NREGS. The scheme was launched on February 2, 2006.

Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, while presenting the General Budget for the year 2007-08, said NREGS was a demand-driven scheme carrying a legal guarantee of employment and that the budget allocation for it would have to be supplemented according to need.

In addition, a sum of Rs 2,800 crore will be provided for Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) for rural employment in the districts not covered by NREGS. Besides, the allocation for Swaranjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) will be increased to Rs.1,800 crore (including NER component) next year from Rs.1,200 crore in the current year to strengthen it.

Gas pipelines exempted from taxes

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) To encourage exploration activities and to help sustain the energy security of the country, the government today said pipelines carrying gas would get a tax exemption for 10 years. In his budget speech, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said the energy sector is high on the government's agenda. In the six rounds of New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) so far, 162 production sharing contracts have been awarded. Indian and foreign companies have already made an investment.....

Customs duty reduced on non-agricultural products

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The peak rate customs duty for non-agricultural products is proposed to be reduced from 12.5 per cent to 10 per cent. Announcing this, while presenting the General Budget 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha today Finance Minister P Chidambaram said this reduction is one more step towards comparable East Asian rates. He proposed duty reduction on most chemicals and plastics from 12.5 per cent to 7.5 per cxent. Duty reduced on seconds and defectives of steel.....

Allocation for National Rural Health mission raised

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Proposing to increase the allocation for the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) from Rs 8,207 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 9,947 crore in 2007-08, Finance Minister, P Chidambaram today said major emphasis would be on mother and child care and prevention and treatment of communicable diseases like TB and malaria, presentsing the Union Budget 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha today, Mr Chidambaram said Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) systems were being mainstreamed.....
