national means cum-merit scholarship scheme introduced

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Government today announced to introduce a new National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme to arrest the drop out ratio and encourage students to continue their education beyond class-VIII.

Presenting the Union Budget for 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister, P Chidambaram said under the new scheme, each student would be given Rs.6,000 per year for study in classes IX, X, XI and XII. Besides, one lakh scholarships would be awarded every year.

In order to fund this programme, a corpus fund of Rs.750 crore would be created this year and a like amount would be added to the fund every year over the next three years.

Accordingly, a sum of Rs.750 crore would be placed with the State Bank of India and the yield from the fund would be used for awarding the schorships, he added.

Bomb hoax delays train

Surat, Mar 6 (UNI) An anonymous call claiming that a bomb had been planted in the Vadodara-Valsad Intercity Express, turned out to be hoax this evening. The railway police control room received the call following which the train was halted at the Surat railway station for an hour. A thorough search was conducted by sniffer dogs and the bomb disposal squad. But no suspicious objects were found and the train was allowed to proceed for Valsad at around 2200 hours......

Mumbai, Mar 6 (UNI) Two members of notorious Ravi Poojari gang have been arrested by the Ulhasnagar Police near Sahar Railway crossing in neighbouring Thane district. Police said acting on a tip-off that two members of Ravi Poojari gang would come near Sahar Railway crossing to loot a businessman from the locality, the cops laid a trap and nabbed the gangsters in the wee hours yesterday. Judicial custody of Ravindra Kantrole extended till Mar 20

Mumbai, Mar 6 (UNI) A local court today extended till March 20, the judicial custody of Ravindra Kantrole, suspected serial killer in Azad Maidan murder case. Kantrole was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M H Belose, who ordered the extension of the judicial custody. Earlier, Kantrole was arrested on January 22 on charges of house breaking and later he was booked for the murder.
