Man attempts immolation outside Raj Bhawan; saved by scribes

Lucknow, Feb 28 (UNI) A 70-year-old man today attempted self immolation outside Raj Bhawan even as Chief Election Commissioner was holding a meeting with political parties on the high security premises.

However, timely intervention by journalists standing outside to cover the event saved his life. He was detained by police and rushed to the nearest police station for questioning.

The person had reached the area drenched in kerosene. The inflammable's smell alerted reporters standing nearby.

The man, Jayantri Tiwari from Dhani Bazaar, Maharajganj district claimed 1,100 families had been recently displaced due to construction of a check dam.

''The government had released money for compensation, but it was never distributed to the affected families,'' he alleged.

Several men and women had accompanied him to Raj Bhawan.

Marathi encyclopedia's 18th edition to be published soon

Kolhapur, Mar 2 (UNI) The 'Marathi Vishwakosh (Encyclopedia) Nirmitee Mandal' has undertaken the work of bringing out 18th edition of the Marathi encyclopedia. An announcement to this effect was made by Mandal President Dr Vijaya Wad today where she told reporters that the 17th edition of the 893-page Marathi encyclopedia, comprising of 783 entries, around 300 black and white and colour photographs and 44 photo - letters prepared by the Mandal, was released by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on February.....

Strike by autorickshaws, TMT buses concluded

Thane, Mar 7 (UNI) The one-day token strike called by thousands of auto rickshaws and Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) bus services was called off this evening but with a warning that if their pending issues were not resolved within next three weeks, then an indefinite strike was imminent. Thousands of autorickshaws and the entire fleet of TMT buses went off roads since last midnight following a strike call given by their respective unions. Court rejects bail plea of former Cong corporator, son

Akola, Maharashtra, Mar 8 (UNI) The Sessions Court here has rejected for the second time, the bail plea of former Congress corporator Aliyar Khan, popularly known as 'Allu Pahelwan', and his son Azad Khan, accused of creating chaos during polling for the recent Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections. The father and son are languishing in jail since their arrest on Feb 1. However, other twelve persons, who had been arrested for riot, have been released on bail in the first week.....
