ICSI hails Budget as growth oriented and for inclusive growth

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) today welcomed the Union Budget 2007-08 terming it as growth-oriented and aiming at inclusive growth.

"It is a sharp-edged balancing exercise to speed up growth but could have given further relief to the corporate sector which is the engine of growth," newly-elected ICSI President Preeti Malhotra said in a statement.

On the positive side were the focus on agriculture, education and health in the budgetary proposals presented by the Finance Minister aimed at making the growth inclusive to achieve social justice.

She described the stress on soft infrastructure like skilled manpower, secondary and higher education sectors as "a welcome feature." ICSI Secretary and CEO N K Jain, in his reaction, noted that "the Budget gives desired impetus to grass root level, small and marginal farmers, unorganised sector, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Small and Medium Enterprises to foster growth and social justice".

He lauded the proposals to retain the level of service tax, increase the threshold exemption and commitment to introduce national goods and services tax from April 2010.

Phone tapping no longer permissible without order of Home Secy

New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) The Supreme Court was informed today that no phone tapping or interception of any message or class of messages under Sub-section 2 of Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885, will be permissible without the orders of respective home secretaries in case of the Centre or a state government. The new guidelines notified by the Union government yesterday also clarified that phone tapping could be permitted in unavoidable circumstances under the orders of a duly.....

SC grants two weeks to Telgi's wife for proving innocence

New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) The Supreme Court today granted two weeks' time to Shahida Abdul K Telgi, wife of Abdul Karim Telgi, the kingpin in the Rs 2250 crore fake stamp paper scandal, for filing additional documents proving her innocence. While hearing the bail application of Shahida, a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Ravindran observed,'' You are fully involved in the scam and you have been making payments of money and you are aware.....

HC reverses life sentences to three in 24-year-old murder case

New Delhi, Mar 2 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today set aside the life sentences awarded to three convicts in a 24-year- old murder case. Reversing the trial court's verdict, the Division Bench headed by Justice R S Sodhi and Justice P K Bhasin accepted prime accused Piara Singh's claim that he had not been arrested from the scene of the crime as claimed by the prosecution. ''We are of the view that the plea of alibi taken by Piara.....
