HC refers dispute between Jet and Sahara to arbitrator

Mumbai, Feb 28 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today referred a dispute to an arbitrator on the failed takeover bid of Sahara Airlines by Jet Airways, whereby they were seeking to recover Rs 500 crore from Sahara Airlines.

Observing that there is a clause of arbitration in the agreement between the two Airline companies, Special court Judge D K Deshmukh disposed off the the suit filed by Jet Airways, seeking decree to recover Rs 500 crore from Sahara Airlines and referred the same to arbitrator. Now the issue will be added to matters already referred earlier to the arbitrator.

The dispute relates to failed takeover bid of Sahara Airlines by Jet for which the latter had entered into an agreement with the Sahara group company to purchase cent percent shares in the Airlines on January 18, 2006.

The proposed transaction was supposed to be completed within 65 days from the date of the agreement. As the deal could not be completed within the stipulated time, another agreement on January 20, 2006, was done thereby extending time to complete the deal upto 265 days. This agreement also allowed the Sahara group to withdraw Rs 500 crore, out of Rs 2,000 crore deposited by Jet in an escrow account and through this litigation Jet is now tring to recover that amount for which Sahara group Chairman Subrato Roy had stood as personal guarantee.

CBI files application to record statement of Koli

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) today filed an application before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in a city court for recording the confessional statement of Surender Koli, accused in the infamous Nithari killings. Koli was sent to the custody of local police, Ghaziabad from December 29, 2006 to January 11, 2007 and there after in CBI custody since January 11, 2007. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate(ACMM) Kamini Lau directed the investigating officer of CBI that the accused.....

Kanungo challenges order on Varma's 'Nishabd'

New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Film Director Jahar Kanungo of Bengali art film 'Nisshabd' today challenged the order of the single bench seeking directions on the stay of the Friday release of Ram Gopal Varma's 'Nishabd' starring Amitabh Bachchan, on grounds of plagiarism. Kanungo's counsel Kartik Jai Shanker mentioned the matter before a division bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who posted the matter for hearing tommorrow. Justice A K Sikri on Tuesday dismissed Kanungo's petition.....

Man arrested with more than 9 kg charas

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) In a snap search, police seized more than nine kg of charas and arrested a 35-year-old from Roshanara Park in North Delhi. Islam, who had come to peddle the drug in the area, was arrested last evening follwoing a tip-off, police said today. Charas powder, weighing 9.12 kg was seized from the possession of the accused who hailed from Moradabad (Uttar pradesh) and worked as a labourer at a brick kiln in Bhagalpur, Bihar.
