Globalisation is for haves only: Dr Baxi

Surat, Feb 28 (UNI) Noted human rights activist and professor of law at University of Warwick Dr Upendra Baxi has said that globalisation and new economic policies concerned only the ''haves'' and not the ''have-nots''.

He was delivering the Justice D A Desai Memorial Lecture on ''Reading the New Economic Order from the Perspective of Justice D.A.Desai'', organised by the Surat Citizen Trust here today.

Dr Baxi said we are living in an age of hyper-globalisation where there occurs a universal standardisation of tastes.

''Globalisation is not a new phenomenon. We have already faced three types of globalisation -- conquest, colonisation and the formation of United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948,'' Dr Baxi said.

But, the current globalisation is much different and we are merely following the United States in formulating our economic perspectives,'' he said.

''In fact, we are living in a Disney Land of fantasy where the aspirations of the have-nots are not being taken into account,'' Dr Baxi said.

Had Justice Desai been alive today, he would have opposed this hyper-globalisation, Dr Baxi remarked.
