Education cess hike to yield Rs 5,300 cr: FM

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The hike in education cess from two per cent to three per cent would yield an additional revenue of about Rs 5,300 crore, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said today.

The government would collect an education cess of Rs 10,671 crore during the current fiscal and the one per cent hike in the Budget proposal would result in 50 per cent higher collections, he said at the post-Budget press conference.

Aam Aadmi is all over Budget: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) 'Aam Aadmi,' the Congress party's mascot, is writ all over Budget 2007-08, according to Finance Minister P Chidambaram. The one lakh means-cum-merit scholarship, employment for one lakh physically challenged people a year, grant for ground water re-charge for seven million dug wells and social security for 10 million rural landless households were all meant to benefit the 'aam aadmi,' Mr Chidambaram said today. Duty cut on petrol, diesel to reduce under recoveries

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Welcoming the Finance Minister's move to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel prices, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora today said it will have a direct effect on the oil companies to reduce their under recoveries. The move will not further cut the fuel prices as it was already reduced on February 15, Mr Deora said. Mr Deora said the Oil Ministry will approach the Finance Ministry to issue extra oil bonds to further.....

Nothing for the media in the Budget: Ronnie Screwvala

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) While welcoming the Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the Lok Sabha today, as one with "a long-term perspective", UTV's Ronnie Screwvala today bemoaned the fact that there was nothing in the budget for the media.
