E-governance plans get more budget support

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The government today said e-governance projects will get a boost in budgetary allocation from Rs 395 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 719 crore in 2007-08.

In his Budget speech, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said the Central Government supports e-governance action plans at state level and also proposed to increase the allocation for such support from Rs 300 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 500 crore in 2007-08.

''I also propose to provide Rs 33 crore for a new scheme of manpower development for the software export industry,'' Mr Chidambaram said.

He said the tele-communicatons industry has repeatedly requested that the multifarious taxes, charges and fees applicable to the industry be unified and single levy on revenue be collated.

''The request merits consideration. Hence I propose to request the Department of Telecommunications to constitute a committee to study the present structure of levies and make suitable recommendations to the government,'' the Finance Minister said.

Budget announces one lakh scholarships for secondary education

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Union Budget for 2007-08 today announced an ambitious 'National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme' to encourage students to continue their education beyond class VIII. Under the scheme, one lakh scholarships per year will be given for study in classes IX, X, XI and XII and a like amount would be added to the fund every year over the next three years. New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Every drag of the 'cancer stick' -- cigarette and bidi -- will now become costlier while health-giving south Indian delicacies idli and dosa, which have made tremendous inroads into kitchens across the country, are going to become cheaper. Budget allocation to Nepal reduced

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The government has reduced financial aid to Nepal but increased it for other neighbouring and African countries in the 2007-2008 Budget estimates even as the allocation for the External Affairs Ministry has gone up to Rs 4433.60 crore from last year's Rs 4095.05 crore. According to the Budget Estimates for 2007-2008 for the External Affairs Ministry, presented by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in Lok Sabha today, Rs 1768.55 crore have been allocated for assistance to.....
