Countrywide BIS raids at 20 location in 8 states

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has conducted raids at 20 locations across eight states against firms misusing the ISI mark without a valid license.

The raids carried out yesterday in Delhi, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala and Assam were against firms manufacturing packaged drinking water, gas stoves, cement, plywood, PVC insulated cables and GLS lamps, the BIS said today.

''More raids are on the anvil as fake products are a threat to the safety and health of the common man,'' BIS Chief Vigilance Officer Anant Dhule said.

While the maximum six raids were conducted in Delhi, three were conducted in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, two each in Haryana, Gujarat, West Bengal and one each in Kerala and Assam.

Violators are likely to face a fine of upto Rs 50,000 or one year imprisonment, the official added.

Aged stoned to death

Lucknow, Feb 28 (UNI) An aged person was stoned to death today over a dispute in Gosaiganj area of the state capital. The dispute which was related to a land in Sarsavan village, soon turned violent and Puttilal Shukla was brutally murdered by four villagers. The miscreants also assaulted Shukla's son Rohit, who was rushed to a hospital in a severe condition. Meanwhile, one accused has been held and a search for others was on, police said. UNI.....

Auto sector wish-list remains untouched in the Budget

Mumbai, Feb 28 (UNI) The domestic automobile sector that expected a number of sops in the Budget for 2007-08 like reduction in the excise duties on motor cars, phase out of CST, elimination of surcharge, withdrawal of FBT and removal of cess was disappointed that none of its wish-list had come true. The automobile industry is one of the growth drivers of the economy, as such tax concessions would have provided increased sales thereby making significant contributions to the exchequer,.....
