CITU march to press demands

Madurai, Feb 27 (UNI) The Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today took out a massive procession in the city and staged a demonstration to press their charter of demands, including making the Welfare Board for workers in the unorganised sector functional.

Over 3000 workers, including 800 women, led by CITU State Vice-President M Chandran and city unit President B Vikraman, took part in the procession and demonstration.

They raised slogans demanding that the Labour Department wake up from 'slumber' and address issues concerning workers. They also sought extension of welfare board benefits without delay.

The demonstration was organised in front of the office of the Joint Commissioner of Labour in the city.

Similar demonstrations and protest marches were held in district headquarters, as part of the state-wide agitation.

Widow beaten to death by in-laws over AIDS suspicion

Puri, Feb 27 (UNI) A widow living in Keutunga village under the Gop police station was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws on Saturday night as they suspected her to be suffering from AIDS. Thirty-year-old Sabita Behera was suffering from fever for several days which her in-laws believed to be AIDS. Housing Corporation official arrested on corruption charges

Hyderabad, Feb 27 (UNI) Sleuths of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) today caught red handed B Madhava Rao, Work Inspector of AP Housing Corporation at Pondur section in Srikakulam district when he accepted Rs 600 as bribe from the complainant. The ACB officials recovered the tainted amount from the accused and arrested him. Mr Rao would be produced before the Special Judge for ACB cases, Visakhapatnam, an official release said here.
