Capital markets initiatives in Budget

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) In line with measures announced every year to strengthen the capital markets, Finance Minister P Chidambaram proposed in the Budget 2007-08: * PAN to be made sole identification number for all participants in securities market with an alpha-numeric prefix or suffix to distinguish a particular kind of account; * Idea of Self Regulating Organisations (SRO) to be taken forward for different market participants under regulations to be made by SEBI; * Mutual funds to be permitted to launch and operate dedicated infrastructure funds; * Individuals to be permitted to invest in overseas securities through Indian mutual funds; * Short selling settled by delivery, and securities lending and borrowing to facilitate delivery, by institutions to be allowed; and * Enabling mechanism to be put in place to permit Indian companies to unlock a part of their holdings in group companies for meeting their financial requirements by issue of Exchangeable Bonds.

HC reserves orders on Nalini's daughter's case

Chennai, Mar 6 (UNI) Madras High Court today reserved orders on a petition filed by Nalini, who was awarded life sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi Assisination case, seeking a direction to the Union Government to permit her daughter Mehra to come to India and stay here until the status of her citizenship was decided by the Centre under Section 9 (2) of the Citizenship Act. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Mr Justice K Chandru reserved orders.....

Piramal Group compliments Finance Minister

Mumbai, Mar 1 (UNI) Nicholas Piramal India Limited Chairman Ajay Piramal and Director Dr Swati Piramal today complimented the Finance Minister and termed the Union Budget 2007-08 as 'novel' one. ''The most redeeming feature of this Budget is keeping the fiscal deficit of 2007-08 well below the FRBM target of 3.3 per cent. The proposal also contains some novel thinking such as Reverse Mortgage Scheme to be implemented by the National Housing Bank, companies allowed to issue exchangeable bonds for unlocking.....

State Q branch police arrests a Srilankan national

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Mar 6 (UNI) Sleuths of Tamil Nadu 'Q' branch police have arrested a Sri Lankan national, suspected to have links with the banned Sri Lankan Terrorists Organisation, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), at Dheeran Nagar here tonight. A senior Q branch police official told UNI that the state police who had secured Arulseelan (32) last night at his house, after conducting a surprise raid had handed over him to the Q branch police for further interrogation......
