Budget-2007-08: Infrastructure continues to be a focus area

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Continuing the focus on infrastructure building, Finance Minister P Chidambaram has proposed enhancing of Budgetary support to some major projects in the Union Budget 2007-08.

Noting that two Ultra Mega Power Projects (UNPPs) have already been awarded, Mr Chidambaram stated that 7 more UNPPs are under process and at least 2 more would be awarded by July 2007.

Mr Chidambaram said that as the Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Project (APDRP) has significantly reduced Aggregate Technical and Commercial (ATC) losses in 213 towns, the project is being restructured to cover all district headquarters and towns with a population of more than 50,000. ''I propose to increase the budgetary support for APDRP from Rs.650 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 800 crore next year'', he said.

Further, Mr Chidambaram informed that the allocation for the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana is being enhanced from Rs 3,000 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 3,983 crore in 2007-08.

For the highway sector, the Finance Minister said the provision for the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) would be enhanced from Rs 9,945 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 10,667 crore in the next financial year. Further, the road-cum-rail bridge over the Brahmaputra at Bogibeel, Assam would be taken up as a national project.

1396 ITIs to be upgraded into centres of excellence

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) As many as 1396 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) have been proposed to be upgraded into Centres of Excellence in specific trades and skills under public-private partnership (PPP). This was announced by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, while presenting the Budget proposals for the year 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha today. Under the proposed scheme, the State Government, as the owner of the ITI, will continue to regulate admission and fees; the new management will be given academic.....

ESOP brought under FBT, dividend distribution tax hiked

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Employees' Stock Option Plan (ESOP) has been brought under the Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) in the Budget 2007-08. The value of the fringe benefit will be determined in accordance with a prescribed method on the date of exercise of the option, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said during the presentation of Budget proposal 2007-08 in the Lok Sabha today. Expenditure on free samples and displays has been excluded from the scope of FBT, he added. Dividend distribution.....

New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Reduction of duty on petrol and diesel, expanding the safety net for rural poor, additional one per cent cess to fund secondary and higher education and expansion of the service tax net are some of the highlights of the Union Budget 2007-08 presented by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the Lok Sabha today. On excise duty the Finance Minister has brought down the ad valorem component from 8 per cent to 6 per cent on petrol.....
