Attempt to stage fast in front of Rajni's house: 21 held

Chennai, Feb 28 (UNI) A group of 21 people was arrested here today when they attempted to observe a fast in front of Tamil superstar Rajnikanth's residence urging him to organise a rally of film stars against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tributes.

It may be noted that a similar rally was organised by the film fraternity in Karnataka recently opposing the February five award on the quantum of Cauvery waters to the riparian states.

The group, led by an advocate Thanjavur Kamban, assembled at the Cathedral Road and went in a march to Rajnikanth's Poes Garden residence to observe the fast.

Since police permission was not given for it, a team of police officials led by Teynampet Assistant Commissioner Kannabiran and Inspector Ramanathan, stopped them a few metres from the actor's residence and arrested the entire group.

The film world in Tamil Nadu, espousing the cause of farmers on the Cauvery issue, is not new.

A few years back, the entire Tamil film industry, led by renowned director Bharathiraja and Vijaykanth, took out a massive rally from the South Indian Film Artistes Association here to Neyveli in October 2002.

Rajnikant himself had followed it up observing a day-long fast in the city.
