Amendment of Art 371 demanded

Gulbarga, Feb 27 (UNI) A massive procession was taken out by the Hyderabad-Karnataka Horatta Samithi here today, demanding that the Government mount pressure on the Centre to amend Article 371 of the Constitution to accord special status to the backward region.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly N Dharam Singh and several other political leaders took part in the programme.

Later addressing the gathering, Mr Singh advised the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to amend Article 371 and take the Opposition into confidence.

Samithi President Vyjanath Patil threatened to intensify the stir by staging demonstrations in every district of the region if the Government did not take steps to amend Article 371.

Pongala at Attukal temple from Feb 23

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 21 (UNI) The annual 'pongala' festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy temple, known as ''Sabarimala of women'', will be held here from February 23, temple trust members informed today. Talking to mediapersons here, trust president R Gopinathan Nair and chairman G Madhavan Nair claimed that about 25 lakh women, the largest annual gathering of women in the world, were expected to take part in this year's pongala ritual on March three. Congress withdraws dharna in Assembly

Mysore, Feb 21 (UNI) Protests against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal continued unabated in the Cauvery basin districts of Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar for the 17th day today.
