University lecturer held for misbehaving with girl student

Varanasi, Feb 27 (UNI) A lecturer of the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKV) University here, who allegedly misbehaved with a girl student on February 21 was arrested today.

Police said Gautam Chatarjee, a former scribe and lecturer at the Faculty of Performing Arts, MGKV was arrested for misbehaving with a Master of Music (M Mus) student on the varsity campus.

The varsity had terminated his services last evening.

The arrest comes close on the heels of yesterday's lathicharge by MGKV securitymen on journalists and students protesting the incident. At least six scribes and some students were injured.

Agitated over the lathicharge, the scribes had staged demonstration at the Sigra police station, while the students had damaged an MGKV vehicle.

An FIR had been registered against Gautam, MGKV Vice Chancellor Surendra Singh Kushwaha and Chief Proctor Mahesh Vikram Singh.

Widow beaten to death by in-laws over AIDS suspicion

Puri, Feb 27 (UNI) A widow living in Keutunga village under the Gop police station was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws on Saturday night as they suspected her to be suffering from AIDS. Thirty-year-old Sabita Behera was suffering from fever for several days which her in-laws believed to be AIDS.
