Tory leader leads with 11-point: survey

London, Feb 27 (UNI) A survey today has put Tory leader David Cameron in an 11-point lead, enough to put Conservatives in power in Britain.

The CommunicateResearch Poll for The Independent puts the Conservatives on 40 per cent (up six points since January), Labour unchanged on 29 per cent, and the Lib Dems on 17 per cent (down four points). At a general election, such a Tory lead would give Mr Cameron a 100-seat majority.

Last week an ICM showed support for the Tories had reached a 15-year high and that Mr Cameron would have a 13-point lead in head-to-head contest with Gordon Brown.

The YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph last Friday showed that Mr Brown, who expects to take-over from Tony Blair this summer, was losing his reputation for economic competence and failing to convince the voters that he would make a better Prime Minister than Mr Cameron.

Today's poll shows the highest rating for the Tories since CommunicateResearch began political polling in August 2004. Mr Cameron appears to be making progress in rebranding his party and winning over undecided voters. The Tories have the support of 43 per cent of those who do not know which party they identify with most, while 28 per cent of this group say they will vote Liberal Democrat and just 19 per cent intend to vote Labour.
