Speakers win, UKD chief, Indira Hridayesh loses

Dehra Dun, Feb 27 (UNI) Speaker in the outgoing Assembly Yashpal Arya (Congress) and his predecessor in the post Prakash Pant (BJP) won the Mukteshwar (reserved) and Pithoragarh assembly seats in Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, the BJP, leading in over 30 seats and looks likely to return to power, has won five seats, while the Congress has bagged two.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) Kashi Singh Airy has lost from Kanalichhina seat, which has won by the Congress' Mayukh Singh In Nainital, BJP candidate Kharak Singh Bohra has wrested the seat from UKD's Dr Narayan Singh Jantwal. BJP has also retained the Didihat seat, with its candidate Vishal Singh Chufal emerging victorious.

Indira Hridayesh, a minister in the N D Tewari cabinet, has lost to the BJP's Bansi Dhar Bhagat in Haldwani after a see-saw contest.

NHRL stressed need to upgrade health care facilities

New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) Emphasising the need to upgrade healthcare facilities at ''all levels'', the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has made a slew of recommendations, including introduction of public private partnership, for ensuring that the masses have access to healthcare. The suggestions include recognising courses for Nurse Practitioners, introduction of public private partnership with a regulatory mechanism, Medical council to have inbuilt compulsory rural attachment, proper drug procurement mechanism, intervention of health and labour departments and industry in checking.....

INTACH gives dying water bodies' new lease of life

New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) Ramkiran, a resident of Hauz Khas area in South Delhi, has many beer bottles put away in the closet, but there is no beer in them. These days they are full of water. ''I don't have many utensils at hand and the water is very erratic,'' retorts Ramkiran. Faced with a depleting groundwater table, many residents of Hauz Khas area are grappling with an acute water shortage. However, hope seems to be rekindled after the 700-year-old.....

SAD-BJP bags 10 out of 13 seats, leads in 56

Chandigarh, Feb 27 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine today bagged 10 out of 13 seats and has established comfortable leads in 56 constituencies as counting progressed of the votes cast in the February 13 Punjab Assembly elections. The ruling Congress won three seats while it was leading in about 36 constituencies. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal (Lambi) and SAD's Capt Kanwaljit Singh (Banur) were prominent Akali winners. However, SAD suffered setbacks with former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.....
